I’ve been sitting on this letter for a couple of weeks waiting to see where the chips would fall. I had hoped that by letting the Port Jervis Humane Society have some time, that positive change could be made. Unfortunately a lot doesn’t seem to have changed for the better and I’m now sharing this information to once again try to force some change. I am sure you all remember our blogs about what we considered the heinous and tremendously inhumane conditions and cruelty at the Port Jervis Humane Society:
- Port Jervis Humane Society – “Humane” Society or horror show?
- Open Letter to the Board of Directors of the Port Jervis Humane Society
- Port Jervis Humane Society – rejects our offers to help save the lives of their animals
- A note to shelter directors – CHOOSE LIFE
After we revealed the conditions there and posted those blogs, they posted on their FaceBook pages how everything was changing and my blogs were referring to an old regime (while even at the same time denying all the allegations) and that there was a new shelter manager now (Katrina) and we needed to “give her a chance” that she was going to change everything for the better.
So what positive changes has Katrina made since we wrote those blogs? Since our last blog they are down from 15 board members to 7, as multiple board members have walked away and resigned and will no longer work with the Port Jervis Humane Society. Katrina is currently faced with impending criminal charges, illegal activity, and the inhumane treatment of a dog at the time she killed it. At least according to a letter recently put out by Dr. Roeder.
For the record, Dr. Roeder has been the veterinarian caring for the animals at the PJHS for 25 years. According to her, she does this care for a tremendous discount, what she has referred to as pretty much her cost and very little above that. That’s quite an amazing deal for them. So let’s be clear that this is a very deep, ongoing and established relationship that they have had.
On March 9th, she sent the following letter to the board of directors at the PJHS.
You can read the full text here.
The jist of the letter, is that not only will she no longer work with them, but that she is actually pressing legal and criminal charges against them as well as reporting them to Ag & Markets. I’ll analyze a bit of the letter (as it appears to me) below:
In Nov 2012 she says she certified their new shelter manager, Katrina, as a euthanasia tech. How sad that they need a person there to kill their animals. Do you know how many certified euthanasia techs Pets Alive has at our three locations? None. Because we choose not to kill our animals and if one is suffering and needs to be euthanized for irremedial medical, it is like the loss of a family member to us, and the vet comes onsite, we all gather, and we weep and mourn their passing. So we’ve never had a need for any certified and licensed euthanasia technician. Sad that they feel that they do. But I digress.
Dr. Roeder writes that on Jan 16, Katrina used a controlled substance to sedate an animal. The dog came in and was bleeding from a laceration. RATHER THAN TAKE THAT ANIMAL TO A VETERINARIAN FOR PROPER TREATMENT, Katrina appears to have decided to treat a serious medical condition on her own, and used illegal (to her) drugs to do so.
Katrina is not a vet tech. She is not a veterinarian. She is not a doctor. She is not a nurse. She has absolutely no business treating an animal’s wound. She is NOT permitted to use controlled substances, according the the letter. That is NOT part of what her certification allows. Dr. Roeder explains that Katrina was well aware of the law in regards to this and seems to have ignored it. Dr. Roeder was extremely upset and immediately went to the board of directors in regards to this incident (remember HER license is at stake here). She says the board took no corrective action against Katrina, nor held her accountable for her illegal actions. Dr. Roeder revoked Katrina’s certification license. At that time, Dr. Roder says she advised the board that the license was revoked and clearly told them and Katrina that they could NOT DO ANY EUTHANASIA there.
On March 4, while the shelter was closed, Dr. Roeder states that Katrina went ahead and killed at LEAST 4 animals. So sad that they didn’t reach out to Pets Alive before killing those animals as we have asked them to do, but worse than that, they completely ignored what appears to be a CLEAR directive from the veterinarian who had her own license on the line…but this is the attitude we have come to expect from the staff and board of the Port Jervis Humane Society.
Dr. Roeder goes on to say that the killing of at least one of those animals was inhumane. She states that a lay person (not a vet tech, not an employee of the shelter, not a veterinarian) held down a struggling dog to be killed, while all the other dogs were barking and agitated. She advised that in the past they did their killings in the back rooms, with the doors shut – far away from the barking of other dogs and undue stress. Possibly due to the intense stress of the animal as they held him down and killed him, the lay person was bit.
According to most shelter policies I am aware of, all bites must be reported. This bite was not reported (per Dr. Roeder). In addition, per Dr. Roeder’s letter, they failed to adminster the correct amount of medication and like I reported in past blogs about this, the animal was left to flop around and die a terrible death. It appears they never even administered any pre euthanasia drug to this poor dog named Storm. RIP Storm. I’m sorry you had the misfortune to wind up in the hands of the Port Jervis HUMANE Society.
When Dr. Roeder found out about this, according to her letter, she immediately notified the board president, and again she states nothing appears to have been done.
Later that same month, the office manager asked Dr Roeder for authorization to order samples of a new prescription drug. Dr. Roeder denied the request. Dr. Roeder advises in the letter that Katrina went ahead and ordered it ANYWAY (under Dr. Roeders license) and then posted on their facebook page offering the drug for sale. It is ILLEGAL to resell drugs like this (for multiple reasons and also there are serious tax related issues)….and the letter says the manufacturer saw the post and demanded it’s removal.
The letter ends with statements from Dr Roeder that she planned to file complaints and/or charges with the state police, with the department of agriculture, with the NYS dept of Education Division of Professional Misconduct, and the insurance company for the Port Jervis Humane Society. She also has refused to ever work with them again.
WHEW!!
Pretty intense.
So why didn’t I release this when I first heard about it and read it last month?
Well, because I respected Dr. Roeder’s request to NOT publicize it yet as she was hoping that a board meeting that was held this past Tuesday would result in some positive change. There used to be 15 board members. We understand that 8 have walked out (?) and there are only 7 remaining. Without a quorum the board CAN NOT CONDUCT BUSINESS. Yet, they continue to do so. Dr. Roeder felt their bylaws allowed members of the org to VOTE for new directors to fill the vacant seats, but the board claimed that they had amended the bylaws and now this was no longer permitted. I was a little shocked at that.
MY understanding of bylaws is that you MUST abide by your by-laws, and if you amend them it must be done by a QUORUM VOTE of the board (of which they have none) and that they must then be submitted to the State Attorney General’s office, ACCEPTED by the state attorney general, and PUBLISHED by the state attorney general. I believe that there is then a waiting period for any board members to speak up that they did not vote for these amendments or to protest them, and THEN and ONLY then they become the legal by-laws of an organization. None of this was done. I could be wrong, but this is how MY organization has always done things when we had to amend or change or by-laws. This was brought up to the board on Tuesday night along with MANY other questions and the board responded that they did not have to answer any questions, they would only take comments.
Is THIS what we want to run our local humane societies?
“We don’t have to take any questions?”
Don’t question us? We can do whatever we want regardless of state or local laws?
So donations are down, funding is down, they can’t afford food (I’ll get to that in a moment), half the board has walked off, the veterinarian has walked off and is filing criminal charges against the management, their own volunteers are attending “secret” meetings to discuss how to overthrow the present board. We attended one of those meetings and at the second the name of a volunteer here was suggested for nomination to the board. Even the people now FIGHTING the PJHS said “NO, we don’t want HER, she is associated with Pets Alive”. So the OLD regime doesn’t want our help, the potential NEW regime doesn’t want our help…they are all bickering and fighting amongst themseleves…how much longer can this last?
I will add that the current board president Lisa did call us last week (note, correction, Lisa has pointed out that she called me a FEW weeks ago, she is probably right).
I have not called her back, but I will.
I’m interested in what she has to say and if she will want to bridge this vast abyss and try to resolve the issues there.
Because we CAN Help fix this.
We have done it before.
We CAN help work with them and restore their reputation, their donations, their view in the community.
We can help them save lives.
We did it here in Middletown after we took over Pets Alive when it was a hideous place and animals were not in good condition.
We did it when we took over Elmsford and we had to rebuild that whole organization in the communities eyes and restore their faith down there.
We did it when we took over Manos Por Patos who had no money, no funding and only a glimmer of a plan.
We have done it before. We can help.
Will they take our help?
I have strong doubts that will happen, as it seems they are unwilling to work with any organization like us, but surely now, in light of everything that is happening they will see that the path they ARE on isn’t working and things are NOT going well.
In the ensuing weeks and months after our previous blogs, we heard rumors that donations dried up as people started learning of the situation there, and that many people had removed the PJHS from their wills and trusts. We don’t know what is true really, but we did see the PJHS send out an appeal to the community begging for food and stating they didn’t have enough food to care for the animals.
On 4/5 the Times Herald Record ran an article quoting shelter manager, Katrina: The shelter was completely out of cat food, dry and canned, and almost out of dog food. It had $200 to replenish cat food, but the new shelter manager, Katrina Roloson, said that would last maybe five days.
So the PJHS spends $200 every 5 days JUST for cat food?
That surprised me for a few reasons. First I’m unclear how a budget is not set in place for food orders. Why would they not have the funds to purchase food? Their 990’s state that they have 1.6 million dollars in assets. I would think food, medical care and staff salaries are your very first priorities, food being the very first.
So to say there was not enough food is troubling and concerning at the least. Everyone appeals for food donations, of course we all do, and donations help alleviate this financial burden…but to state that they only had $200 alloted to buy food and that they were COMPLETELY OUT….that’s frightening. You let your shelter get COMPLETELY OUT OF FOOD??? Secondly they also posted on their website that it costs over $3400 a month to feed the animals there.
It DOES??????
$3400 a month?
They say they have about 80 cats and 40 dogs. So if $200 lasts five days for cats that is $1200 a month to feed cats and $2200 to feed 40 dogs? Um. Really? Who the heck is doing their books?? As shelter manager, I would expect this falls on Katrina’s shoulders. Is she really spending $3400 a month on food? Then she needs to be educated on WHERE to buy food and HOW to set up wholesale accounts! We could help them if they would accept our help.
What the heck are they feeding?
PJHS houses roughly 100-120 animals.
Pets Alive Middletown houses roughly 250-300 animals.
Our monthly food bill for dogs and cats (if no food is donated) TOTAL is about $1800.
It costs us $300 a month to feed our cats and about $1500 to feed our dogs (we also feed goats, horses and pigs not included here). So add in some wet food there and some special diet food, we are looking at about $1,800-$2000 a month in dog/cat feed. So how in the word with 60% less animals than we have, is the Port Jervis Humane Society spending $3400 a month?
I think whoever is managing that place needs to set up some wholesale accounts or re-evaluate what they are spending, but that seems very excessive to me and we feed our animals pretty well! Who manages the finances there if this is what they are spending? Why is there no money for food? If they think they spend $3400 a month on food, how did they run out of food by March 5? Only five days in? How did they only have $200 for food five days into the month when they think their needs are $3400? How is a shelter manager allowing the shelter to run out of food, and how can it cost so much to feed so few animals? And what are they doing with their 1.6 million in assets, (as claimed on their 990’s) if the priority is not to keep the food pantry stocked? These are just a few of the questions I have.
According to last years 990’s (the last year filed which is 2011) they have 1.6 million dollars in assets and brought in $554,000 and spent $378,000, leaving them with a little over $176,000 at the end of the year in the bank. And yet they have no money for food to feed the animals? Anyone else seeing a disconnect with this? (Click image below to see full size and more legible).
By the way. Out of the $378,000 spent, over $200,000 of that went to salaries.
Yikes.
MORE THAN 52% of their annual expenses were salary.
Out of the $176k left, only $88,000 went to the actual animals care.
Those numbers are not great.
The news article goes on to say that they want to start a TNR program and I very much support them in this. I am thrilled to see they want to start this program and it says they have put aside money for this: “Park said the shelter has $2,700 put aside for the program.”
So you have $2700 sitting somewhere for a program that isn’t started yet, but there is no money for food?
I’m really confused here.
This is not making any sense at all.
Just how is that shelter being managed?
Are they ready yet to reach out and ask for help?
I hope so.
We can do so much if we work together.
Alone, how many lives can the Port Jervis Humane Society save in a year?
How many could they save if we all worked together toward saving lives, saving money, sharing resources and working toward a common goal?
Think about it.
United we are all far more powerful and effective than alone.
This one tiny shelter currently beseiged by unrest, corruption, illegal activities and disension can still be saved.
Will they be smart enough to save themselves, or will they go under?
The time to ask for help and to rebuild is NOW Port Jervis.
Give us a call.
Let’s work on a fresh start and a new beginning for your organization.
Let’s work together to get rid of the bad, fix the broken, and save and enhance the good.
Our door is open and we WANT to help.
Let us.
Your community is counting on you to make this right and you’re too critical in your area to go under.
But if you continue along this path – that is exactly what will happen.
We have experience in saving and working with organizations like yours.
Let’s work together to keep you alive, and to fix the plethora of problems and ills that have marked your organization for the past few years.
It’s salvageable.
YOU’RE salvageable.
Your staff is salvageable.
We can help.
Let us.
This is so upsetting. Those pictures are heartbreaking. I hope they let Pets Alive help them. The misery of these poor animals is so unnecessary.
Again, this was under the management of the LAST director William Lloyd.
How do ANY of the allegations against the “current” shelter director have anything to do with William Lloyd?? It’s time to give up that tired excuse.
Excellent post, Kerry. Thank you for continuing to bring this shame to light.
Actually, this letter is, um, Wow,don’t even know what to say, but again Full of lies, Kerry I thought you were busy with PETA, What secret meetings, oh you mean the two new spies you sent in, do you think their Pets alives tote bags gave them away, LMAO! If you were in a meeting with volunteers it was just you and them. But thank you for the entertainment…. Oh and your concern.
Once again, we have never sent in spies. The person you refer to as a spy was asked to do what she did by two of your own board members. NOT us. When she turned over all the material to them, they did nothing with it. THEN she came to me. I have never put any spies in place and never needed to. Your board members, your volunteers, your adopters COME to us to complain about the issues there and ask what we can do. And as far as pets alive tote bags, I specifically tell all our volunteers never to hide who they are. Pets Alive vols are free to go there and volunteer if they like. And when I went to those meetings I wore my Pets Alive jacket. We have nothing to hide. We are completely up front about who we are and what we want. We want change at the Port Jervis Humane Society. Positive change for the animals. We are not hiding. We are proud to support no kill and humane treatment of animals. We don’t need to sneak around. Why would we? We can walk right in. You are a public facility. All this subterfuge is in your head.
I am appalled that PJHS is having these issues. I have always believed that they were a good resource for help with stray animals. How can this be allowed to continue?
I am not affiliated with any organization but I am a human being and believe that animals need to be treated humanely.
Please,PJHS, ask for and accept the help.
A lot of the allegations against the new shelter manager have everything to do with the old shelter manager, William Loyd. For example, Charlie and Coco, two dogs mentioned in this blog as being killed by Katrina were both dogs killed by William Loyd- the old shelter manager. Katrina is trying to clean-up a mess that one man made on his own over too many years of poor management. Dr. Roeder has such a problem with the new shelter manager, Katrina, but she turned her head to SO many issues under William Loyd’s complete lack of management. Dr. Roeder never mentions William Loyd as a problem because she is a personal friend of his. Dr. Roeder is choosing who she wants to blame for the problems at PJHS. If you want to address real issues, then William Loyd and CB Chant are two names to be discussed. These two men ran PJHS for far too many years and are responsible for the root of all the problems so many people want to blame on Katrina and the people now trying to make the PJHS a better place.
Keri,
It is no secret that I’m no fan of Bill.
But how do you address what Dr. Roeder is claiming. That Katrina killed that dog without proper medication, that she ordered drugs when told she couldn’t, that she euthanized even after her license was revoked?
While I’m interested in what you have to say, I don’t see how those accusations can be put onto Bill. Please explain.
It is a very simple explanation – all are allegations and have no truth behind them. Before you waste another second of your time, sit down with the people of the PJHS to learn the truth. It is so very easy to sit behind a computer screen and type/post without knowing an ounce of truth. I invite you to come out from behind your computer screen and learn the truth.
If you were not a fan of William Loyd then why didn’t you create the stir you are making for the PJHS today when he was the shelter manager? Like Dr. Roeder, you must have chosen to turn away from it. That to me is amazing. You were willing to turn away from and be okay with the management of William Loyd, but you are not okay with the management of person who is trying to make a change.
Um Keri? How am I trashing any one? I reported what dr roeder stated. Are you saying then that all my past allegations and all of dr roeders allegations are all false and all lies?
C’mon.
Sigh.
Thought we were actually going to have an intelligent exchange here.
Guess not.
Unfortunately the majority of dr Roeders letter was false. The “drugs” were flea and tick medication we didn’t need a vets permission to order, just to obtain samples. I have all documents showing this. I also have emails from the sales rep. The only agency that can revoke a euthanasia certificate is the one who issues it, the Beauro of Narcotics, who completed an investigation and filed no charges or fines against us. The certificate was NEVER revoked. Dr Roeder pulled her letter of REFERENCE. RIP Storm? Really? You were contacte personally about TAKING HIM. You refused. You ask us to let you help!! We went to Pets Alive today, myself and Lisa, our board president. We spoke with your staff and manager, who made us aware you knew we were there, and yet you couldn’t find time to come meet us, for HELP. You couldn’t return a phone call, that was 3 weeks ago, not a week… Nor have you responses on our last request for help, sent and received via certified mail. I assure you no dog I have EVER euthanized was “flopping around” nor are euthanasias EVER done in the main kennel.
This is your response to me? Really? Yes, all of Dr. Roeder’s allegations are false. Again, I invite you to meet with the people of the PJHS to learn the truth. Please explain why you did not blog about William Loyd’s poor management. You did say you are not a fan of his, correct? At least we can agree on one thing.
Ok. So all my MY blogs are made up. Lies and inaccurate. All the pictures and video i posted were doctored and made up. All of dr roeders allegations are lies made up and inaccurate. And I have reason to be upset with PJHS (& made all this up) why?? And dr roeder made up all her statements…why?
I DID blog about Bill. You aren’t reading all my blogs? Should I be offended? Read the last blog link above.
And what about the cost of food there. Are you upset or concerned that $3400 a month is being spent in food? When we feed almost triple the number for half that?
Look Keri what do you want to do here.
Do you want to see the PJHS survive and thrive?
Are they surviving and thriving under bill OR Katrina?
Personally I don’t care about Bill or Katrina.
I want to see success and kindness to the animals there.
I want to see more volunteers.
I want to see the level of care go up.
I want to see the board of directors get along with each other and staff and
Volunteers.
Do you want to see all the same things?
Then we aren’t enemies.
Throw down your weapons and we will do the same and together we can help fix things there.
Or do you just believe everything is great there and nothing stated in any of this is accurate at all?
yes keri you do say a lot,but when you used your authority as a board member to keep the dog storm at the shelter by saying you would adopt him after two vets, said it was to agressive a dog for anybody to adopt and it bit bill in the face, the shelter kept the dog going for you only, and when you decided to put the dog down, you got bit by him, then it was ok to uthanize,so practice what you preach.on top of that you misused your authority as a board member by asking them keep the dog for your personall adoption at the expense of the humane society C. B. CHANT
I know you are speaking to the other Keri, but I do want to add something here in regards to aggressive dogs.
A shelter or a rescue can still be “no-kill” and euthanize a dog for aggressive issues.
While we do not euthanize such dogs here, we have a behavior modification program and a quality of life assurance…we do recognize that a no kill shelter or rescue DOES on occasion euthanize severely aggressive dogs.
Pets alive would like to be given the OPPORTUNITY to see if we can help dogs that other shelters are putting down, but by no means are we looking for, or asking for aggressive dogs.
We are simply asking for the HANCE to see if a dog that is about to be euthanized would be a good fit in our program.
sorry about the wrong keri but to over rule the decision of two vets i think is a very bad idea and in the end they were both right.
OH C.B. let me tell you something, she brought in 2 dog trainers to work with Storm, what did you do, to help how many dogs did you save or walk. while the previous director was under your leadership you allowed him to put all those innocent dogs to sleep! as the president you should have brain stormed and came up with adoption programs to save these lives , but instead you chose to condone these choices…. so with that being said you yourself were responsible for all those innocent dogs that were put to sleep.. pat yourself on the back sir job well DONE!!!
why wont you appove my messages…
This is such a joke! Lesson 101 people… In elementary school we have all been taught, there are three sides of every story, your side, her side and ” THE TRUTH “. The truth being, come see what we do. Things are not perfect, but in six months we have accomplished not killing for space! I pat ourselves on the back for that! People should sit back and stop and think before writing things on this blog! For many years of supporting killing innocent animals you have no RIGHT TO speak your piece mr. Ex “PRESIDENT”
truths hurts Right Kerry Clare
This is a joke! lesson 101 people, in elementary school we all have been taught, there are three sides to every story. “Your side” “Her side” and “THE TRUTH” the truth being… come see what we do and what we have done! In 6 Months we have accomplished NO KILLING FOR SPACE! If you ask me that is a big accomplishment! Isnt that what you wanted kerry? not killing for space well guess what.. thats what we are doing! before people start replying to this nonsense sit back and really think of your roles or used to be roles at the shelter!
you have no RIGHT, NO RIGHT commenting on this blog, remember what you did, and allowed to happen. MR. EX PRESIDENT, allowing all those innocent animals to death.. way to go!
So Vanessa if it was done for the past six months and it was done once before a long time ago, then you admit it CAN be done.
Good.
So as of today you are no kill?
Since you have proven it CAN work and CAN be done?
I offered many times to pay for his housing and food costs. I brought in a trainer to work with him and brought him to my own personal vet before deciding he was not going to be able to come home with me. I spent my entire summer at the shelter making sure he got out to get fresh air and love. I also spent my entire summer making sure other animals got love and fresh air. I was a board member for possibly two months out of the year in which he was housed at the PJHS. I had no power or authority. As a board member I am there to make the lives better for the animals. As a board member, I don’t think there should be power given to any one person or persons for that matter. We should all be there for the same reasons. The reasons are simple: get animals adopted, give animals love and attention while they are at the shelter to make their stay with us comfortable and happy, and to work with other board members and volunteers who are at the shelter for the right reason- to help the animals. How many dogs have you walked at the shelter, CB? How many animals have you tried to get adopted at adoption events, CB? How many animals have you taken the time to get to know, CB? If you want to have a real discussion with me about the positives I have brought to the shelter then please let me know.
CB Chant ULTIMATELY it was YOUR friends BILL who let this dog LIVE long as he did. HE was the director and if HE felt this dog was dangerous shouldn’t he have used his judgement to over rule Keri and euthanize storm? I also believe you were President while Bill “allowed” this to happen and also money to be “borrowed”.
Keri tried to save Storm and no one should fault her for that. She was not even in te board when Storm was alive. So your accusations of “misusing” power are false.
You my friend helped run that place into the ground along with William Lloyd.
We’re you not te president in 2010 when 156 dogs were euthanized?
Enough said.
YES he was!!!! and did he ever save anyone of them NO!…
As for Roeder’s letter. I can disprove a lot of it with FACTS and documentation if you would like? I was always good about taking pictures and audio and video. Dr. Roeder chastises Katrina for using Telazol to calm a dog with an injury but I saw William Lloyd use the SAME drug in the SAME manner and this is a man who had been director for 35 years.
As for putting animals to sleep in a “stressful” environment, Bill would TIE them to the cat cages and euthanize them that way with barking dogs. He NEVER locked doors as evidence by a few volunteers walking in on Coco tied up and euthanized. A TINY dog tied to a cat cage.
How about the fact that he did not “weigh” animals before they were out to sleep? He guessed. ALL facts.
This PROVES that Dr.Roeder is BIASED to Bill because of she could look past all of that and chastise Katrina, she has a SERIOUS screw loose.
Or how about when we would walk into the office to work in the not OMG and we would find dead cats on the deal that he euthanized the night before and forgot to put them in the freezer.
Or when he would get mad and chuck leashes at people’s heads.
CB, again, you were the president when all this happened. Why were you not more involved in the day to day to day runnings?
From 2008-2011 488 dogs LOST there life. Was that “trying”?
Katrina has made it a POINT to NOT kill for space and not ONE dog since she took over, almost 6 months now has died for “space”…
That’s the ONLY number I care about.
This is such a horrible sad story. Total mismanagement! I applaud your effort to help them. What I find more disturbing is that the community is not giving any food donations. I know that Katrina is really out of control but it is the animals that are suffering by the community not donating food. I truly hope that they accept your help. I am willing to pitch in as well and can be reached at ax11779@yahoo.com. If I can write a letter or make a phone call that will help I will gladly do it. I am going to donate some dog food as well. What will happen if the shelter gets shut down? where will all those animals go? This is so sad. I wish there was something I could do.
Lisa, nothing would happen to the animals, we would welcome them all here, as we do with most rescues or shelters that close in the area. They are ok. The point is, I think that they do have money for food, it is just really odd that they don’t spend it, or that they are spending so much. I think the management may need some help in learning how to soure food at wholesale prices maybe.
lol she only appoves the ones she wants to see, right Kerry….the truth hurts
No Vanessa, As long as people are COURTEOUS I release their posts. If you knew anything about blogs, you would understand that with every REAL post, there about about 20 spam ones, even with running an ASKISMET spam blocker. It is what the world has come to. So I go through usually once a day and release posts, or if I happen to be sitting at my email when they come through I can click a link on the alert and it auto releases the post. Always ready to jump to the negative, eh?
i may not have handled many animals at the shelter, but it also takes fund raisers to keep the shelter going and for eight years i raised a total of 80 thousand dollars that i did mostly on my own with the variety show,so do not forget, raising money is just as important as walking the dogs.so lets see who can do a ten thousand dollar a year fund raiser C.B.CHANT
So, for years dogs were being euthanized inhumanely, which was witnessed by volunteers who NEVER came forward; dead cats were being left on a desk and this witnessed by people who NEVER came forward; people were having leashes “chucked at their heads” and kill rates were high? None of this surprises me, but thank you, former employee and current fiance to the new office manager, for airing the dirty laundry for all to see.
Every single one of you reading this right now who witnessed all of the above and did NOTHING about it are just as guilty as the party you are pointing fingers at for actually doing it.
These statements just prove how clueless any of you are to run a shelter that truly puts the welfare of the animals first. ANYONE who truly puts their needs first would have MOVED MOUNTAINS to have this cruel and inhumane treatment stopped LONG AGO. What I will never understand is why no one did. To stand by and know all of this and not go to every single authoritative figure that could make a change is inexcusable and again, makes you just as guilty as if you were cruel & inhumane to those animals yourselves.
By the way, I keep hearing about how the dogs are no longer being euthanzied for space. How nice if that’s true. But I have a question for you, what about the cats?
What I find interesting is that when I put the other blogs out they all denied any of that happened. It NEVER happened.
Everyone LIED. We are just trying to make them LOOK bad…and on and on and on.
NOW it all happened but it was the OLD regime that did it all.
Goodness.
You guys are your own worst enemies.
Christine – How DARE you! What because I didn’t go to the LENGTHS you did, I am someone who doesn’t care? I spent a YEAR practically LIVING at that place. I did not “create” opportunities for my photos like someone did. I did EXACTLY what you did, I collected evidence. Evidence of the euthanasia, money stealing, bad managerial practices. I REPORTED them to the board of directors as I SHOULD have. I spent MANY days and hours at this shelter SAVING lives. I did not just TALK about it like some of you have..
What did you want us to do? What you did? Post for people NOT to support the animals? Post for people to BOYCOTT a shelter that these animals call HOME? I am SORRY but ATTACKING like vultures makes you NO BETTER! We saw to it the old director WAS removed. He left in November AS YOU ALL KNOW. We did adoption events EVERY weekend and we drooped the EUTHANASIA rate in 2012 to 26, if that’s not doing SOMETHING well then come and do better sweetie. I have messages FROM you telling ME what a great job I was doing. Hypocrite? Id id my best while trying to not get hrown out. I believe you were THROWN out correct? So how did you help the animals any further?
When he LEFT, Ms. CLAIR here instead of CONTACTING a BRAND new shelter director to OFFER her help she decided it be best to BLOW it up and let this poor new girl defend herself against something she had NO part of.
Glass houses should not throw stones. I DID see to it that the three people MOST responsible for the death and other mispractices are NO longer at this place or employed.
I did my part and I continue to do my part. Pets Alive is a great organization however you should REALLY think about how you go about things. Katrina DESERVED the respect from Kerry for her to CONTACT her behind closed doors with help first!
You know Bill, you were there. Are you aware that Dr. Roeder’s plans for the shelter with that letter your friend posted are to BRING BILL BACK TO TRAIN SOMEONE ELSE!
So Kerry & Christine, thank you for posting her letters and aiming to get more people on Roeder’s side so the MAN who MURDERED so many ANIMALS can return with a majority vote!
That’s a STAND up Job!
Kerry NO, we did not DENY it, we said these practices were under OLD management! Shall I pull up my comments? I still have them. Bill left in NOVEMBER, Katrina took over and you posted your blog in DECEMBER. Did you even GIVE Katrina the chance to talk to you? NOOOOOOOO you didnt!
I came to you about BILL LLOYD, NO ONE ELSE! You INITALLY turned me away and cast me as a liar for 6 months! If you were THNAT concerned you would have at the very LEAST entertained what I told you and instead you BLEW it off!
Kerry – If you would like I can post ALL of my comments from the last blog stating BILL was the problem and he was now gone and Katrina was aiming to make a difference. Shall I post them for all to see? I can use screen shots. I am NO liar. I NEVER said these things didnt happen, NEVER. I CAME to you when they were happening!
Christine – CATS are bo longer Euthanize for space. They do there best to find EACH and every one of them a home. Things are CHANGING under Katrina, you people don’t wanna give her the chance though!
CB – 10 grand. Congrats. when the shelter is running 125 grand int he red and your the president I would hope at LEAST you would try to raise a little money to cover the debt you helped create and I am sorry, raising money is important, but the animals i bet would MUCH rather have a walk!
The GOLF outting Angelo and I did raised around $8500, the hpynotist show Keith did, brought in $3500 oh and also we spent MANY a days on Saturdays and Sundays collecting money at the MANY adoption events we did!
Bill was the director for 30+ years. A small town guy like myself who is not from here would have been LYNCHED if I would have came right out with my findings, I would have been banned and my findings swept under the carper. I went about it the only way I could, methodically and secretly and I eventually did what NO one else could, MY findings made him resign!
oh mr ed you are so great, the shelter never made money at the end of the year with many presidents before i took office for the last 20 years and besides if they did they would lose there tax free status.i may have not walked to many dogs but i can tell you that i opened up my wallet many times for thousands of dollars and without donations they will not exist.i do not just run my mouth like you do and nothing to back it up,like your vigil that never happened, your protest at dr roeders, your other info that you never reveal but you say you have, which causes great doubt.as for the dog with the cut paw the contract with every community use to say that any hurt, wounded or serious injury was suppose to be taken to a vet, they pay the bills, and then the shelter takes over the care of the animal,so as far as i know that incident should have never affected the shelter.also for your bad mouthing dr roeder the shelter probably would not have made it if it was not for her,she donated a huge amount to that shelter.and to bad mouth a vet that has over 1000 patients and a waiting list of a few 100 i think she deserves a little more respect than she is getting, and by the way she spayed over 700 animals last year for the shelter.so lets see who does what she did for the past 25 yrs and charge what she charged, you should check the facts before you condem her c.b.chant
Kerry – End of the day I have a couple serious questions.
1. AFTER Bill left and Katrina took over did you or Pets Alive make ANY attempt to contact Katrina and ask her if she needed help BEFORE you broke the first blog?
2. Do you agree that it may have been in the animals BEST interest to try and WORK with Katrina before going and posting stuff that happened under the OLD director?
3. ARE you AWARE that the PLAN all along from Dr. Roeder and her “supporters” is to BRING back the MAN that MURDERED so many animals all while mismanaging even the finances?
PJHS is STILL an open admission shelter and ALWAYS will be. They WILL euthanize aggressive dogs or dogs deemed aggressive by a court HOWEVER Katrina and the board has given the OK to the volunteers to pound the pavement and work our ASSES off to find EACH and EVERY animal that walks through those doors a home! So can we call our self a “No Kill”? NO, but I am now back there helping like I did in 2011 and I can tell you this, just like before I work work DAY in and DAY out to save EACH of those animals and I will work HARDER then I did before to see that it happens.
I have said it before, I respect you and I came to you because were not so different of people Kerry. We both have the same vision, mine is just a little different on how we get there.
For anyone to bash these volunteers for defending there animals, there shelter and there director is wrong. I am SURE at the end of the day, if YOUR facility came under such heavy scrutiny that EACH and EVERYONE of your volunteers and staff would defend you and your organization to the fullest?
Why? Cause the volunteers are the HEART and SOUL of ANY organization like yours and ours. Without them you and I wouldn’t have anything to argue over..
Can we put the swords down and work together and let me show you that CHANGE has been made? After all, I was the BIGGEST opponent of euthanasia then ANYONE at this shelter.
Ed,
I have not taken any sides whatsoever.
I have reported what the PJHS board members reported to me.
I have reported what the PJHS volunteers reported to me.
I have reported what the PJHS adopters have reported to me.
I have reported what the veterinarian of 25 years has reported.
No where did I say I support the OLD regime or the new.
If you truly want my opinion, I think BOTH are awful and BOTH need a ton of help and work to make PJHS what it could be.
In regards to the future and what we are willing to do or who we are willing to work with, you aren’t an employee of the shelter.
How we go forward will be between myself and the employees there.
We will certainly keep you informed.
LOL Ok Kerry…. Again, I came to you for HELP with the “old” regime as you put it and again YOU blew ME off… LOL.. You said so yourself in the last blog “I thought he may be a disgruntled employee”. If someone cares about animals SOOOOO much, you could have at the VERY LEAST looked into it. You did’nt until MONTHS later.
I REALLY hope they decide to tell you to forget your help because all of YOUR answers go back to the SAME old tired thing “power”… Your not the biggest dog in the yard, so you should REALLY stop acting like it.
I will no longer waste my time arguing with you. The ONLY answer you want is CONTROL and they would be making a BIG mistake as so I have heard from friends in “other” organizations you have done this too.
Have a WONDERFUL day =o)
Ed
Yes Ed, that’s what it is all about.
Because this is so much FUN.
🙂
You found me out.
You big genius you.
Can’t pull the wool over YOUR eyes!
Well, this certainly looks like a healthy organization. They’ve totally forgotten about the blog, or Dr. Roeder, they just want to argue amongst themselves. This whole thing is pathetically sad. No organization can survive with this much infighting. Let’s see what we can do to try to get them past this mess and turned into an organization that gets along with each other, respects each other and works together to save animals…..like we do here.
CB – Katrina is shit and Bill and Roeder are perfect. That’s what your saying right? Well while Roeder may be a great vet, no one who cares for animals would post a sign like she did TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL. End of that story.
Bill did a LOT of wrong, open your eyes my friend. He MURDERED many animals and WOULD NOT except change…. He ALLOWED “borrowing” of money from a REGISTER. ALLOWED it and you find this OK?
Katrina has done her best with each one of you LEECHES sucking the lifeblood out of her. Your FRIEND is gone, hes’s NEVER coming back. Keep this in your mind… If I wanted him in jail I could have put him there and HE knows that CB.. He knows what I saw and the evidence I took. Ask him. He knows I was watching him and at the end that’s why he pushed SO hard to get rid of me.
Just because you open your wallet doesn’t make you a good person. Anyone who turns a blind eye to these killings should really look in the mirror.
I am done arguing with you too…. Have a wonderful day CB and tell Bill I said Hi, hahahahaha
Guess I’m a little late to the game, but Ed’s comment above summarizes it perfectly – “anyone who turns a blind eye to these killings should really look in the mirror”. That pretty much describes every Board Member and employee of the shelter over the past 40 years (is that how long Bill Lloyd was there?). You’re all to blame and so is every single volunteer who was too chicken sh*t to speak up along the way. If it makes you feel better to say that you stood by the shelter because you loved the animals, then you go with that theory. There’s power in numbers and if you all joined forces, you would’ve overturned the shelter a long time ago. I wonder how many of your “favorites” would still be alive today? So sad. 🙁
OMG this is the most terrible thing that I have ever read – why don’t you look and see what you are saying and doing. All I can see is that there is nothing HUMANE in any of the post – You all should be ashamed – I will never ever support anything you do again – I am sooo glad that I saved my little dog from your clutches – he was very sick when I got him and knew he would not survive if he stayed there – but I had no idea how bad it really was – shame on all of you. Including the Vet and Chant – if this was true that all these animals where put to death – why was this allowed to go on – the ASPCA should be made aware of your shelter ( which seems to be a true misnomer in this case ) this is not a shelter this is a disaster – At least that is what these post are saying. Shame Shame Shame on all of you.
I agree with Gisela 100%. You should all stop the high school bullshit and start working together on improvements to the shelter. Enough finger pointing, what is done is done. Learn from the mistakes and move forward. Now that the public is fully aware of what went on in this shelter, you’d better pray things are turned around quickly. I’m writing this as part of an animal rescue group and volunteer at a different Humane Society.
I went to the meeting to learn for myself what was true. I cannot begin to describe the horrible circus. Instead of addressing the “hearsay and allegations”, the board, rather poorly, hid behind their board protective by-laws. The board shared how they would vote new board members in and that the membership could nominate but not vote for members. Additionally, current board members would interview perspective board members and a subcommittee of current board members would make the decision. Yet despite two new people being nominated for one position, the subcommittee went into another room without interviewing and came back out having re-elected the current board member. This was despite members sharing that the person up for reelection was actually not and two other board members terms had expired. The board said they were going with the one position they stated despite the fact his term was not up until next year Board members allowed their volunteers and animal behaviorist to openly attack people asking questions regarding their board positions and policies. Their animal behaviorist postured herself towards the audience, spouted off her bachelors degree, demanded to know what qualifications the person asking questions had and continued to berate this woman. The board of directors allowed this to happen. Other volunteers and shelter workers heckled and yelled at those who asked questions screaming “why don’t you walk the dogs instead?” And then demanded a raising of hands as to how many people in the room have spent time at their shelter. This was allowed by the board yet they continued to tell those who asked questions this was not how the meeting worked. Oh and did I mention that when asked about seeing the budget a board member said they don’t have a budget. I agree that we must move forward. The only way to do that is for the current shelter staff to step down and allow new people to build relationships to save the animals rather than the destruction that continues. If anyone from the shelter remembers the meeting differently, I have the meeting on tape and can certainly post it.
This is appalling! Where is the HUMANE in Humane society? This is a few miles from my home town. These poor animals! They should be charged with neglect, abuse and anything else you can think of. What is the aversion to Pets Alive? who do I call to get this place shut down until they operate correctly? the director up on charges and the board erradicated and replaced?
I left a message at your office today about 430pm, I am looking for some help with PJHS as I have been given a run around with the adoption of a dog. After I Googled for the board of directors for the PJHS, as I had enough dealings with Katrina. I see dealing with the board of directors won’t be easy either or helpful. I spoke with the Humane Society of the US and that is what they suggested. I need help!!! Please 🙂
What I meant was I googled to find the board of directors and came across your blog and found it intriguing….
