Our Mission, Vision, and Values

Pets Alive is a no-kill animal shelter, located in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, about 1 1/2 hours from New York City. We are one of the oldest no-kill organizations in the United States.

Established in 1988, Pets Alive’s mission has been to help animals in need.

Our mission is to build a humane community supporting the human-animal bond by being a resource through rescue, adoption, intervention, education, and outreach.

Vision:  A community where all animals are loved, respected, and treated humanely.

Values: Pets Alive embraces above all, kindness, compassion, integrity, respect, inclusiveness, and collaboration in all aspects of our mission and our vision for a humane community.

We have a number of community-based programs that helped our neighbors care for their pets – with a goal to keep pets in homes. In 2021:

  • Our community donated dog and cat food to our Pet Chow Pantry, helping keep their neighbors’ families together when times got tough. More than 4,000 pounds of dog and cat food were distributed in 2021 to our neighbors and helped keep pets with their families.
  • Access to affordable routine veterinarian care is vital in keeping families together and supporting the human-animal bond. In 2021, 537 pets received wellness exams and rabies vaccines at a reduced cost. Collaborating with Catskill Veterinary Services, PLLC, and Besties Animal Rescue, we brought essential veterinarian services to our community. In 2021, we expanded the program beyond just Orange County. We also brought the program to families in neighboring Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess Counties in New York.
  • In the past year, 254 community cats were spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Over 60% of these cats and kittens were brought into our adoption program and the remainder were returned to their colonies through our TNVR (Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return) Program. These community cats live and thrive in our neighborhoods and are loved by their caregivers.
