We got an email from a long-time friend to Pets Alive – Joanna Seere.
She had an amazing story to tell. In fact, let me allow her to tell it to you in her words:

I want to share with you a story, a story that is miraculous in every way and one that I am proud to be part of. Please relax and read on.
I began working with a woman named Donna from Tennessee over 10 years ago with her pit bull named Jokko. A real amazing dog who changed Donna’s life and inspired her to devote herself and all her very modest resources to rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls and reeducating people about the true nature of the breed. This is a breed that is so misunderstood- they are sweet, loving, family dogs, who when breed poorly or trained in certain ways, can become dangerous dogs. Donna has opened her heart and her home/ grass roots shelter to many of these dogs, including ones who has suffered in the fight arena. The ones she can adopt to good families, she does. Those she can’t spend their lives with her. Donna has become expert in understanding pit bulls and knowing how to best rehabilitate them. At any given time she has 10-15 dogs with her as family members, fosters and in rehab.
Donna called me in April about a 1 year old female pit bull. She had been contacted by a woman named Leann in Alabama who found Donna through the pit bull network. Leann had a relationship with a “kill” shelter in her area. Most kill shelters in the southern US destroy unwanted dogs in a gas chamber. A worker at the kill shelter who knew Leann called her and asked for her help. Dogs are given 10 days to be adopted before they are put in the gas chamber. This man had put this young pit bull Kelley in the chamber on day 7. He had remorse and after 15 minutes of gassing her- and no dog survives more than 5- he took her out and resuscitated her. Miraculously, she survived. The man could not bear the thought of having to put her in the chamber again so he asked Leann to take her. Leann couldn’t say no.
She then called Donna to help. Donna was full up. We sat with the harsh reality that most likely the only thing we could do for Kelley would be to give her a few good days and then a kind departure from this world. Donna could not accept this. She could not let this little one go without knowing for herself that she was beyond rehabilitation. She decided to take Kelley, figure out a way, and she and Leann each drove half way to meet and turn Kelley over to Donna.
Donna, her homeopath and I began intensive work with Kelley. Kelley receives weekly healings. So far, she has not exhibited any aggression towards Donna or any of the other dogs. Over these past couple of weeks, Kelley would experience severe bloating, the releasing of the gasses from her tissues. Donna had her abdomen x-rayed two weeks ago as a precaution against something more serious going on.
Last week, Donna noticed that Kelley’s belly had popped out again. She took her stethoscope and listened. She thought that she heard heart beats. The vet assured her that it was impossible- no dog survives the gas chamber without aborting the puppies. And, remember, she had an abdominal x-ray just two week ago.
Two days later, Donna’s ex called her at work to tell her that there were 6 puppies nursing with Mama Kelley. By the time Donna got home, there were 10!
All the vets that Donna has spoken with say that this is a miracle. No dog survives what Kelley did and no puppies survive it either. All the puppies are full sized, perfect in form and are acting like normal puppies.
I am thrilled to be part of this ongoing miracle. Sometimes life just has to win at all costs and here it is: Kelley and 10 puppies. Kelley is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. She has a special mission in this world and Donna is eager to get Kelley’s story out- to share the miracle and shine a light on the atrocities of gas chambers.
Please hold Donna, Mama Kelley and pups in your heart and prayers. If you or any of your family or friends are interested in adopting one of these special pups when they are ready to be placed- they are boxer-pit mixes, a fabulous combination!- do let me. I’ll introduce you to Donna.
May life always triumph!
Love, Joanna

So now the dogs are born and they are in TN and the dog adoption rate there isn’t soaring, especially for this breed (WHYEVER NOT – THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BREEDS EVER!!!).
So Joanna called us. Could we help?
Ten pit mixes, ten brindle dogs (for some reason brindles are more difficult to place) need help but without us, they may not be able to have a wonderful future. So we opened up a discussion with the end result being that if we can get the dogs here from TN, we would take them, vet them and find them loving homes.
We NEED you.
We need someone (two someone’s) to drive. We need fiannces to rent a van and pay for gas, and cover a hotel for a night.
Trust me when I tell you that if you help us to save these dogs and you follow their stories and then you watch our forum as their new families post updates – you will never regret that you made a difference in these ten little lives. Please go to our website and make a donation to help, or please offer to make the drive. We need you. These ten little innocent lives need you. They did not survive all of THIS to die now. Thank you so much for your kindness, your compassion and your love. It will come back to you, of this I am sure.
Here is a video of mama, and the pups all now weaned and ready to go into homes: http://tinyurl.com/ksnrhu
Update! We have raised the funds AND we have transporters that have stepped up to help. Thank you Angela, Paul, Trudy, Kelly, Patricia, Jeremy and Stephanie, Molly and Doc Irene. It is thanks to you that this story will have an amazingly happy ending!
UPDATE! – After all of that this ‘rescue” decided to hand them over to a local shelter, where she can not be sure of their future fate. Unreal. We are beyond annoyed and fear for these poor pups future. We wish them the best and hope that they all land in good, sound homes. We will refund all donations sent in for this purpose. Any that you designate us to not refund we will put into a transport fund for future emergencies like this. Thank you all for your support. We wish the best for all these pups.
What a beautiful story and a beautiful dog.
Wonderful story. If you have a facebook page, please post it. I’d love to share with my friends and promote support for this organization:)
Kelley is amazing…she is a true mother, she did all she could to live and save her “children”!!!! Brings tears to my eyes!!! AMAZING STRENGTH AND DETERMINATION from a MOTHER!!!!!
What happened to Kelley and her puppies in the end. Did they get adopted or put down? And why did Donna give them up to a local shelter instead of going with the transport to a better life for all?
awwwww i love this happy ending! congrats to kelley. that poor dog went through a lot. she is a strong, sweet dog and anybody would b lucky to have her as a pet. please give kelley a hug for me 🙂 stories like these make me sooooo happy. i am so against the gas chamber. no animal should b taken out of this world as though they were a criminal. to all the people who contributed to rescuing her: THANK YOU. she’s not my dog but i’m so glad she survived the horrors of that gas chamber and was blessed with 10 pups. YaY to kelley. much love.
Please let me know the name of the rescue that turned the pups into the shelter. Carol Orr and I run a rescue in WV, and pull from our shelters, often for other rescues to take them, I would like to make sure this so called ‘rescue’ doesn’t pull any of ours.
Thanks

“Hearts of Gold” Pit Rescue.
THE RESCUE OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR DUMPING THE BABIES AT THE SHELTER–HOW CRUEL AND WHY DIDN’T DONNA HAVE ALL OF HER EGGS IN THE BASKET AND CAREFULLY THOUGHT OUT.
THE STORY OF KELLY IS BEAUTIFUL–WAS SHE DUMPED ALONG WITH HER BABIES—POOR SWEETIE–BETRAYED AGAIN
I HATE ALL THE GASSING CHAMBERS–THE SHELTERS WHO ARE A PART OF THIS TORTURE AND ESPECIALLY THE CRUEL BASTARDS WHO ADMINISTER THE GAS AND TORTURE–THE MAN WHO DID 15 MIN OF GASSING TO KELLY OUGHT TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME FATE.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THIS TORTURE–AND ALL PET OWNERS WHO ARE IRRESPONSIBLE AND DON’T SPAY OR NEUTER ARE EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS CRUELTY AND MASS MURDER.
