Cowboy with his horseyWe are so incredibly touched and grateful to all of you who have reached out to us in support of Cowboy. When Cowboy showed up on our doorstep there was never hesitation from our staff to bring him in from the cold, give him food and water and make him as comfortable as possible. When we discovered his injured leg there was no doubt that we would immediately get him the veterinary care he needed. But it was because of all of you who have so generously donated towards his care that we were able to financially afford Cowboy’s immediate surgery to correct his broken tibia and fibula. Cowboy is truly grateful to you all and says THANK YOU! (Just look at that face, how could anyone resist?)
Screen Shot 2013-03-09 at 3.28.36 PMA few days after Cowboy’s surgery our veterinary assistant Vania, who has been his main caregiver since his return from the hospital, began to notice something interesting about his reactions to her. He was reactive to people and always perked up when she was near him, and when you hold him he seems to stare deep into your soul – but there was something that concerned her about his eyes. She quickly brought her suspicions to our attention and we immediately scheduled a consultation with our veterinarian. He agreed that there was definitely an abnormality and we would need to bring him to a specialist. So this past week we brought Cowboy to see a veterinary opthamologist. His diagnosis was that his retinas and pupils were normal and reactive to light, however there was evidence of a small hematoma in his skull, the result of some type of injury, and that this hematoma caused a loss of vision. In his opinion Cowboy is blind in both eyes. He assured us that Cowboy is not in any pain at that there is no surgery or procedure that would restore his sight.
Screen Shot 2013-03-09 at 3.28.45 PMWe were heartbroken for this little guy. It is blatantly clear that he has been through so much already in his life and yet through it all he has been such an unbelievably loving, calm, sweet and adorable puppy. Although we now know he cannot see, we truly believe he can see something deep down inside of you. His eyes seem to fixate on his caregiver and there is no denying that he is completely aware of the love and affection we all feel for him. Even though our hearts ache for the little guy, his injuries and his inability to see has not slowed Cowboy down one bit, and for this we feel special and lucky to have the opportunity to know him and to be a part of his life. But now it’s time for Cowboy to move on from Pets Alive Westchester – it’s time for him to be in his forever home and to continue his journey, his path to recovery, in a happy, loving home. Screen Shot 2013-03-09 at 3.28.59 PMThere is no reason at all that a blind dog can’t live a long and happy life and you’ll be surprised at how well he gets around – as long as you’re not in the habit of frequently rearranging your furniture, you’ll hardly even notice!
