Thank You Volunteers
We have SO MANY people to thank this month. I decided to make this mailer almost solely about that. I just don’t know where in the world to start. Volunteers have been coming down in droves and doing all sorts of work here at Pets Alive. The transformation at the sanctuary has been amazing and awe inspiring. I so apologize if I neglect to mention someone. So much happens here in a month that your head spins and some days if I am not in I just walk by something and stop dead and say OH MY! WHO DID THAT??? WOW! So please forgive me. We’re going to rectify that so we can acknowledge all the people that go above and beyond.
Thank you to Patti who comes almost every week to do data entry for us. She’s just wonderful and we adore her. So does Jake (that’s my dog Jake – adopted from Pets Alive! – in her lap) and he never misses an opportunity to give her a kiss and tell her how much he appreciates her.
Thank you to Mary Ann and Bill Kuhens for donating their Ford Explorer to us. We can now get our dogs and cats to the vet with relative ease (big crates fit in the back!!). Thank you to their son Michael who donated his computer to us when he got a new one, so we now have a dedicated computer for volunteer data entry people!
Thank you to Holly and Cindy for calling us when they got a Petco donation that they could not use and rerouted it to us – THANK YOU PETCO for the pallets of food and other items. We are so grateful!
Thank you to Joanna Seere who came down to help with Maureen and some of our more difficult dogs, to work with them and help them with the transition at Pets Alive.
Thank you to Bonnie who CONTINUES to stuff and address envelopes for us, hundreds every week. She is the last one still trudging away at it and we so appreciate her perseverance and support!
Thank you to Occupations and Nancy for not only getting us two pallets of dog treats but arranging for a tractor trailer to get them here – FREE of cost. They said they were big animal lovers and didn’t charge us a dime.
Thank you Julie for not only bringing people to Pets Alive and organizing so much help down here (I’m sure she strong arms them all into it!) but also for filing my SEVEN MONTHS worth of paperwork that I never got to. After three months I just gave up. I so appreciate all the time it took you to do that and how organized it all is. I actually FOUND something this week! That’s a picture of Julie with my dog Jasper who thinks Julie should thank HIM for keeping her company. Yes, yes, so all the volunteers get pictures with my dogs. I’m shameless. I admit it…but c’mon is he cute or what?
Thank you to Beth and Joanne for the donation of lumber that we will be able to use in a million ways!
Thank you to the people that donated things off our wishlist – including a new chain saw (thank you Dan!), the sanitizing mats (thank you Jennifer and Karen), and tons of other everyday items. Thank you all. There are too many to name individually, but please know that we are grateful for every package that arrives at our door from all of you. THANK YOU.
Thank you to United Rentals and Scott who always help us out as best they can when we need to rent machinery.
Thank you Allyson for planting beautiful flowers everywhere around the brick house. It looks so much nicer!
Thank you to Sandy A. and Frank who each donated multiple bottles of EQ Wash to us, which will see us through the summer! That is Francis about to get washed. He loves to drink from the hose!
Katy once again came up and stayed two days taking care of all the horses needs. She bathed every one, took care of all their grooming needs and also brought up some gorgeous perennials that got planted down by the kennel. We all just love Katie and the horses always think it’s a treat to see her. She does just about anything that needs to be done around here and is always happy and smiling no matter how dirty she gets.
Thank you to Angela and Frank for the donations of Frontline. It is GREATLY appreciated and very much needed around here. Thank you to Angela also for her mega support these past two months, filling many of our dream requests.
Thank you Rose for your continued support and your deep passion and affection for animals, even ones you don’t know yet. Thank you Bill for not tossing her out for spending all of your money and for coming up every month to check in, bring supplies and say hello to the dogs you helped save!
Thank you Becky for creating the Best Cat House in Town Pets Alive T-Shirts! Get them while they’re hot! Featuring some of the Great Felines up for adoption at Pets Alive, and Pets Alive logo on front. All proceeds go to benefit the animals. Women’s V-Neck T-Shirt is also available. Thanks for you support. Stay tuned – more new and exciting items to come in the future!
Thank you to Jeff and Gail from Fence Depot (on Staten Island) for paying your guys to work overtime when we had 19 dogs arriving and nowhere to put them. Thanks for not charging us for that and giving us everything at cost and then additionally throwing in tons of fencing that you thought we could use at no charge! The picture below is of some of the new fencing being put to good use!
Thank you so much Debbie for organizing our laundry room, collars, leashes and a million other things that were all over the place. Everything is in a specific place now with similar “like-things”. We love you – it looks GREAT around here! (PLEASE COME BACK!)
Thank you to the friends of Aileen Hurley who came down here under the pressure from Julie W. to do some work for us. They took us by a storm. Painting fences, organizing and sorting our new storage room, ripping up floors, laying down and cutting linoleum, pressure washing and cleaning, walking dogs, playing with cats and of course the “Great Shed Move of ’08” will never be forgotten. We’ve been trying to figure a way to get that shed over here on this side of the road for MONTHS. Thanks for your brute strength and never-say-no attitude. We absolutely loved you all. It was more laughs and smiles that day…I do hope you will all come back. We had such a great time with you and the place looks fabulous!
We also bid a fond farewell to John S. this week. John accepted a position as a dog caretaker at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. John has been here at Pets Alive for over a year now and a huge help to us in many ways. He has been here regularly – every week without fail, and to list everything he has done (including transports) would fill another page this long. We’ll miss him greatly and Best Friends is the better for having him! Good luck John! Thanks for all you have done for the dogs (and cats!) at Pets Alive….hmmm, there was even one 5 am wakeup call to help a horse. (smile). Thank you so much!
Last but not least…our floors. We started out with a half linoleum, half cement floor in our old medical lab and a very ugly old floor in the main office. Tommy the dog had done some redecorating of the linoleum which is why it was half and half in there. He can be a bit fussy about his interior design ideas. So we decided to revamp the space, move the medical office and create a real “office” in the old medical lab, a supply room and then a volunteer lounge where the old office used to be. Great plans…no money. How to do it? VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS! We actually accomplished this thanks to the amazing people that support Pets Alive. OK, first step – we need ceramic tile. We call up Matt’s uncle who owns Shoreline Environmental (a company that deals in mold remediation, fire restoration and environmental service in Guilford, CT)
and say we need ceramic tile. He says how much…boom. Done. We have ceramic tile. (and NICE stuff too! I’m impressed!) Then we need someone to lay it. We get an email from Christie Arlotta and her husband that basically says if we aren’t too fussy about it being perfect that they are not professionals, but have done it a bunch in their own home and would be willing to come up for the whole day and do the job. Wheeee!! Christie’s mom is a regular here so we’re thrilled. OK, we didn’t plan for the fact that since we can’t get all the old linoleum up we now need adhesive to get this stuff down. Christie’s uncle goes out and buys us two huge jugs of the adhesive, because I bought ONE for the whole job – HEY! WHAT DO I KNOW! IT LOOKED LIKE A LOT IN THERE!!!! So they do the tile and it looks FABULOUS (what troopers!) and then the next day it is not dry enough to grout. So I call out all the favors I have and my brother comes over and grouts it the following day. Yay!
OK, next room is the main office and the bathroom. Dale (cat caretaker) says her husband has a friend, Darrin that does it for a living. Tom and Darin can do the other floor on July 4th! This is just too good to be true. So Darin and Tom sweat it out on their day off, on a national holiday mind you and do the whole floor and bathroom, including removing the toilet to make it look oh-so-nice underneath and Darin does it with no spacers…just his eye. We’re all a little skeptical of this and so Lace randomly checks a bunch and dang if they aren’t exact! Tom and Darin come back two days later to grout it all and clean it all up. The floors look just FABULOUS! Juan, Marcos and Chris move everything back into the rooms and voila we have the most professional looking office space. I hear Cathy is going to come down and do some painting on the wall too. Something fun. I can’t wait. Thank you all so very much for all this hard work and dedication, for travelling hours, f
or donating your money, your time and your expertise to help a bunch of hairy four-leggeds and their caretakers! You’re the best!
…and of course thank you to ALL our regulars that come every single week to help out at Pets Alive. You guys are the best and so appreciated.
