Yard Sale This Weekend!!
Becky and many other volunteers have been coordinating a HUGE Yard Sale on Pets Alive property. It will be this Saturday and Sunday (September 27-28). We have so many items for sale, the donations have been pouring in – we actually had to request no more items! Brand new items, used, animal and human alike, even furniture and antiques. Please be sure to stop by – it is going on even if it rains (we have tents set up!). See you there!

Animal Updates

Since my last update on September 3rd the following dogs have been adopted: Gizmo, Gino, Poppy, Bear, Nemo, Georgia, Alex, Opal, Tommy (who was returned and adopted again), Ivy, Boone, Lilly, Sable, Barb, Molly, Lucy, Rainy, Sugar, Sandy and the two pittie puppies (Kona and Kaiah) who went together to their new home! That is 22 dogs to new homes in less than two weeks. Kerri is doing a wonderful job. This picture is of Marisol Thomas holding one of the puppies. They really were cute. We have six other puppies down here, so please fill out an adoption application to come and meet them! Nothing cheers you up like puppy breath!
We also have hits on three of our cats, so hopefully we may have some good news about cat adoptions in the next update. The 50-odd cats that we took in from the Queens Cat rescue and housed in our kennel are doing pretty well. We have decided to keep seven of them, and the volunteers working with these cats have been
able to place all but 14 cats. So there are 14 feral cats left – if you know of anyone that could take some, the only other alternative for this group is euthanasia from the county and we can’t let that happen! Please help us place these 14 feral cats. They are all completely vetted and FIV/FELV tsted negative. If you have any ideas please contact Deb at: debwantuch@gmail.com
Foxy the horse has come back and she has been put in with Murphy, Devil and Noble.
They came to take Carrie and Baxter away today. We were blindsided by the appearance of transporters and a Deputy Sheriff. They had an updated version of the court order that we’ve never actually seen, and it didn’t really order us to DO anything. After a brief conversation where we all expected the cuffs to come out, Matt called our lawyer and the Deputy called his office and Matt decided to not allow the transporters on our property until our attorneys have a chance to look over the order, which should be sometime today. We will continue to work dilligently to ensure that Carrie and Baxter have a chance at a real life. More details will be forthcoming.
We are also taking in 30 dogs this week from New Orleans. These dogs were displaced or abandoned as a result of Hurricane Gustav. We will be taking 15 of them and adopting them from here and boarding the rest until the group trying to help them can place them. They were currently paying $25 PER dog each day to board them down there and we felt we could board them all here at just our cost. So look for them all to be arriving this week. You can preview and see pictures of them here. Aren’t they just the sweetest?
Mitch got surgery this week for his hip dysplasia. He is in a wonderful foster home, who I have to admit we are all hoping might adopt him. His surgery, yesterday, went well and he is on the road to recovery now. His surgery was over $2000. If anyone wants to help donate toward that we would very much appreciate it.
Meeshka has been moved to her new HUGE run. The run goes the full length of the kennel and is wide and encompasses the woods too. Marisol Thomas came up this week and spent time trying to befriend Meeshka. When she would leave a spot, Meeshka would run over and rub her face on that spot! Eventually Meeshka came right up and actually nosed Marisol’s hand! We never saw her take so quickly to a person. It was really amazing to watch. In a couple more visits I suspect Meeshka will be in her lap.

Thanks to our volunteers!
We want to thank everyone that helped us with past events – the Aileen Hurley Memorial Walk was a huge success and money is still rolling in from that amazing event. Over $18,000 I believe was the last count – can you believe that? For a FIRST time event? Julie and her crew did an amazing job with it. Hope to see you all at the walk next year. Jasper had the time of his life!
Additionally we had volunteers staff our table at the Highland Street Festival. Lisa and Jake and Lisa and Fran came down, put up a tent, gave out flyers and information and some people have already come down to meet our dogs from that event. They also raised almost $100 in donations. It was a LONG, HOT day and we’re REALLY grateful.
Thanks in advance to Vic Turi who owns Mountain Top Landscaping. Vic has volunteered to plow Pets Alive driveways all winter – for FREE. Please call Vic up and thank him and hire his company. PLEASE SUPPORT THE COMPANIES THAT SUPPORT PETS ALIVE! Thank you so much Vic. That is a huge savings for us and our worry about trying to get a plow this year can be pushed back a bit.
Thanks to Susan, Carmine and Kerri who did the final leg of some Angel Dog (Georgia) transports for us. Angel Dog has been trying very hard to save all the dogs in their care and not euthanize and we have been helping them out by taking as many of these wonderful, sweet, affectionate dogs as we can.

Thanks also to the crew that cleaned up Sara’s house for us. When Sara died she left her home up the street but it was very cluttered and in need of a lot of work. We want to sell it and donate all the money to Pets Alive but we really needed help emptying it out and cleaning it up. Add to the fact that recently someone broke in and cut out all the copper pipe in the basement, just brought us to our knees. We were so upset about that and it will cost us over $1000 to get repaired…but ANYWAY, Becky, Toni, Cathy, Lynne, Debbie, Yvonne, Danielle, Dina, all went up and cleaned out the house. They over-filled a 30 yard dumpster and found a lot of items for the yard sale. We could still use a painting, some lawn work and other stuff done before it’s ready for sale if anyone is willing to help…just let us know.
Thank you to Irene for our NEW COPIER!! Staff watches it copy and squeals with delight. This things copies 22 pages a minute or more (our other one copied about 1 page every five minutes when it worked). It is also a network printer so we can all connect to it. It’s a fabulous and very expensive machine. We are so grateful to Irene. She called us up, did all the leg work, had it brought here and then came to make sure everything was ok. She was so wonderful. Thank you so much Irene.
Thank you to the crew – pretty much every volunteer on our list – that helped put together, price, move and collect yard sale items. Thanks to everyone who donated something. It is HUGE! Thank you to the folks that donated hte tent to us from J&J Tent Rentals! We know we are going to raise a ton of money this weekend thanks to all your hard work. It’s been just amazing. I’m always stunned and deeply touched by the support our volunteers and donors provide to Pets Alive. Thank you all so very much.
As usual thanks to all our regulars – Charlie – the dispensers work great! Peg and Jim the feral cats are coming out of their shells and becoming adoptable animals thanks largely to you. Cat staff say they come down out of the rafters when they see you two. Thank you guys so much. Ginny thanks for becoming one of our regulars and even dragging your husband here! Thanks Terry for coming in after a long day of work, almost every night to help care for the Queens cats. Thanks Sonja and Lynn for your grooming, care and dedication. We really appreciate your help.
I wasn’t able to get a picture because it is pouring but thank you to Sue and Marty. Sue decorated the whole of Pets Alive with Halloween and Fall decorations. I can’t tell you how much I love this. it is something none of us have the time for. We’re a staff of 10 and we’re doing the work of a staff of 30. It isn’t even something that enters my mind, but going down to the kennel and seeing scarecrows and tombstone halloween decorations set up and things hanging on the doors and in the lounge – it looks so fabulous. Thank you guys so much for your hard work and support of Pets Alive. Everything looks great!
Current Needs:
We are painting the kennel caging (the metal is rusted and dingy) and could use donations toward paint purchase. The type of paint we have to use that is safe and ok to use on this is $30 a gallon. We also found an epoxy we can use on the floor. We are looking for donations ($75 for a 2.5 gallon can) of Behr 1-Part-Epoxy acrylic concrete and garage floor paint. We are looking at the tan with decorative color flakes. Anyone willing to call up Behr and beg for a doantion? Or Lowes or Home Depot? Please help us if you can, or feel free to drop some off to us. We’d really love your help and support on this. We are really spiffing up that kennel to be something nice and HAPPY for the winter!
We are also looking for someone to do Tenneesee transport. We have a bunch of dogs down in Tennessee that we need to get here. If we supplied you with the van, the crates and a night in a hotel would anyone be willing to make the drive and get these dogs? Probably about 15-20 of them and we’re looking to try to get them here in the next month. Anyone willing to do it, please let us know. it is about a 17 hour ride from here…so the trip BACK has to be in one shot since then all the dogs will be loaded into crates in the back and once you have them you can’t stop. (So we need at least two drivers). Please let us know if you can help.
This month we could use a gas-powered weed whacker, AAA and AA batteries, HP Ink cartridges (92,93,98), Murphy’s oil soap, Libmann wonder mop mopheads, three in/out boxes, white card stock, and Advantix. Thanks for your kin
d consideration on these items!

Please consider helping us continue our mission
of finding homes for animals in need!
